Ted Gahl’s paintings of varying scale are energetic works made with intuitive brush strokes and deeply personal imagery. Re- occurring motifs – such as doorways, abstracted figures and storyboard narratives morph alongside bold technique and shifting illusions of space. Gahl’s paintings often read as elements of subconscious activities – reveries, dreams, memories and warped histories, while being firmly grounded in the act of painting itself. Paint on canvas will sometimes be joined by constructed dimensions, which playfully shift the work between surface and object.

Ted Gahl was born in 1983 in New Haven, CT. Recent group exhibitions include: Daphne, Fjord Projects, Philadelphia, PA; Epiphanic Glow curated by Brad Hajzak at Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, MA; Where My Cones At?, Double Break Gallery, San Diego, CA; Not The Way You Remembered curated by Jamillah James at Queens Museum of Art, Queens, NY; Out of Practice curated by Nudashank and presented by Art Blog Art Blog, New York, NY; and Shakedown at DODGEgallery, New York, NY.
